Wormwood: Classic Spooky Small Town in Epic Form

Probably the most common question in podcasting as a whole, not only audio drama, is “what was your first podcast?” No one asks you “what was your first TV show?” except in numbered lists you answer depending on how many likes you get on Twitter. I had a bunch of first podcasts all at the same time, because when I commit to try something, I commit. But the audio drama that stuck with me, and the one that I credit many of the positive changes I made to my life later, is Wormwood.

Wormwood is a supernatural mystery audio drama that ran from 2007 to 2010, following the paths of Dr. Xander Crowe and his highly-competent and exasperated colleague, Sparrow, to the town of Wormwood. This podcast was doing weird, supernaturally-strange small towns early on in podcasting, full of eccentric characters and conspiracies built upon rituals and legendary creatures that range close and far from our familiar ones. There are so many events woven together which connect eventually with masterful writing, keeping listeners both on their toes and hooked for the next clue. The style varies across plotlines -- some are dark Gothic horror, and some are campy hilarity, and some are classic snarky noir, and they all blend together to create a true audio epic.
